key aspects of our inspection process

Similar to our annual inspections, the Prior to Use Inspections cover a wide range of critical areas to ensure the safety and integrity of the playground.

  • Comprehensive Inspection to CSA Standards:

Our inspections follow CSA standards, ensuring that every aspect of the playground is scrutinized for compliance and safety before it is opened to the public.

  • In-Depth Evaluation of Playground Elements:

We conduct a detailed assessment of all playground elements, including equipment, surfacing, signage, and amenities, to identify any potential hazards or safety concerns.

  • Verification of Safety Compliance:

We verify that the playground meets safety regulations and standards for structural integrity, entrapment hazards, fall zones, and accessibility, among others.

  • Thorough Review of Construction Activities:

We review all construction activities and modifications made to the playground to ensure they meet design specifications and safety requirements.

  • Certification for Public Use:

Upon successful completion of the inspection, we provide certification that the playground is safe and compliant with regulatory standards, allowing it to be opened to the public with confidence.

Our Prior to Use Inspections provide peace of mind to clients and communities, assuring them that their playgrounds are not just compliant but exceed safety expectations, fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

Surface Impact Testing:

At Parkcraft, we prioritize the safety of children by leveraging cutting-edge technology to meticulously evaluate playground surfaces and mitigate the risk of fall-related injuries, meeting and exceeding safety regulations.

Our surface impact testing encompasses a variety of methods and measurements to ensure that playground surfaces provide optimal protection for children during play. We coordinate and conduct different types of surface testing to assess critical factors such as G-Max (Peak Deceleration) and HIC (Head Injury Criterion).

Meeting these stringent standards is vital to protect children from serious head injuries while enjoying playground activities.

Playground inspectors proceeding Surface Impact Testing
  • G-Max (Peak Deceleration):

This metric measures the peak deceleration of the head during impact, indicating the “softness” or “hardness” of the surface upon impact. It’s crucial that G-Max values do not exceed 200 times the acceleration due to gravity to minimize the risk of severe head injuries.

  • HIC (Head Injury Criterion):

HIC evaluates the time duration over which the head decelerates and should not exceed 1,000. It considers the duration of impact and helps assess the likelihood of head injuries during falls.

[04 Challenges] in Surface Testing:

Surface testing isn’t a one-time endeavor; it’s an ongoing process that must adapt to the dynamic conditions of playgrounds and parks. Several challenges are inherent in maintaining playground surfaces:

  • 01. Environmental Factors

Playgrounds are exposed to various environmental factors such as humidity, air temperature fluctuations, and solar degradation, which can impact the properties of playground surfaces over time.

  • 02. Humidity

High humidity may compact loose-fill materials, reducing their shock-absorbing capacity, while low humidity can make materials less resilient.

  • 03. Air Temperature

Extreme temperatures can cause solid surfaces to expand or contract, affecting their impact attenuation properties.

  • 04. Solar Degradation

Constant exposure to sunlight can degrade surfacing materials, altering their texture and resilience.

The Vital Role of Regular Playground Inspections:

Regular playground inspections are essential to ensuring that playground surfaces continue to meet safety standards and perform as expected. These inspections, conducted at installation, in the field, and routinely thereafter, help protect both owners/operators from liability and children from potential harm.

Playgrounds are places of joy and adventure for children, but beneath the surface of fun lies a commitment to safety. Playground inspections, particularly those involving impact testing, play a critical role in safeguarding both playground owners/operators and the children who play there.
